Squint -

22 September to 18 October 2003, 8pm Monday to Saturday@ The
Chelsea Theatre, London. Play by Tony Craze -Cast: Rory Murray,
Patsy Palmer, Joe Shaw and Sadie Shimmin
From Monday 22 September Joe Shaw will be starring as Jack in the world
premiere of Squint, a new commission from Tony Craze, writer of the critically
acclaimed Passion seen here in April last year and winner of the Verity
Bargate Award for his first play, Shona. As with Tony’s previous
plays, Squint takes a challenging look at contemporary society and investigates
the inner workings of our complicated and fragile psyche.
Set in the seemingly polar opposite worlds of an East End art studio
and an Anglican retreat, Squint explores human dependence on forces and
substances outside of themselves. Four characters, each very different,
but intertwined, each searching for meaning and purpose in modern life,
find their answers in a range of addictions, both physical and philosophical.
Hugh looks for answers in fine art, booze, and perhaps religion; Courtney
in the trill of cocaine and the moment; Jack in the 12 Steps of the AA
Programme and Ruth in the Anglican doctrine.
Joining Joe will be: Patsy Palmer, best remembered as Bianca
in Eastenders and recently seen in Mum’s the Word in the
West End; Sadie Shimmin who has performed at the National and
Gate Theatres and Rory Murray who has appeared at the National
and Royal Court Theatres and with the RSC.
